Based Surveillance System for Land Reclamation
And
Mine Closure Monitoring
CMPDI
has established a surveillance system for land reclamation and mine closure
monitoring of all the opencast projects in command areas of Coal India Ltd. at a
regular interval of 1 to 3 years based on high resolution satellite data using
digital image processing technique. As per the approved action plan of Coal
India Ltd., all the 49 coal mines producing more than 5 million cu. m. per annum
(coal+
OB
together) are to be monitored annually. Balance 122 mines which are producing
less than 5 million cu. m. (coal +
OB
) will be monitored regularly at an interval of 3 years based on the satellite
data.
Land reclamation monitoring will be helpful in assessing the backfilled area,
plantation area, social forestry, active mining area, settlement etc. in the
leasehold of the mining projects. This is an important measure taken up for
assessing the progressive temporal status of mined land reclamation and final
mine closure status. Based on the above surveillance, remedial action if any
required, for land reclamation will be taken up by the respective coal companies.
