CMPDI has undertaken a comprehensive monitoring of land use/vegetation cover of Singrauli, Korba, Karanpura and Raniganj, Bokaro, Talcher, Ib, Wardha Valley coalfield etc. for different cut-off periods based on satellite data to monitor the impact of coal mining on land environment. Study revealed that vegetation has been increased in almost all the coalfields in span of last 5/7 years due to massive afforestation carried out by coal companies around mined areas. Study also indicates that wasteland has been effectively utilized for industrial development in the region. Land use/vegetation cover maps of some coalfields for different cut-off dates are present for reference.

CMPDI has initiated action to carry out such study on regular interval of 2-3 years for all the coalfields under command area of Coal India Ltd. to monitor the reclamation of mining area and afforestation in the coalfield carried out for maintaining the ecological balance in the region.

Land use/vegetation cover mapping for the coalfield has been carried out by CMPDI based on satellite data of the different cut-off dates for the subsidiaries of CIL for monitoring the status of vegetation cover in the coalfields.
