It is a fully owned subsidiary of Coal India Limited (CIL) and a Schedule-B company. CMPDI is a premier consultant in India and the leading one in international arena and the preferred partner in mining, whose objective is to provide total consultancy in coal and mineral exploration, mining, engineering and allied fields including environmental monitoring and geomatics services.
CMPDI functions through its corporate headquarters at Ranchi and its 7 Regional Institutes located at Asansol, Dhanbad, Ranchi, Nagpur, Bilaspur, Singrauli, and Bhubaneswar respectively-along with various field units and exploration camps.

Consultancy services for development of mine, infrastructure, and associated services are provided to clients outside Coal India as well.
