CMPDI serves as the nodal agency for co-ordinating and monitoring research projects funded under central sector scheme of the Ministry of Coal, Government of India, as well as by the Research and Development fund of Coal India Limited. Recognized as an R&D unit by the Department of Science and Technology (DST), CMPDI plays a crucial role in advancing research in the coal sector.
In addition, National Centre for Coal and Energy Research (NaCCER) has been established in CMPDI, which functions as a dedicated research wing. NaCCER is equipped with specialized personnel to address the research and development needs of the coal and energy sectors. It aims to bridge the gap between academic research and industry requirements by fostering collaboration with both industry stakeholders and academic institutions. This collaborative approach enhances the overall effectiveness of R&D efforts, driving innovation and supporting sustainable practices in the coal and energy sector.
