Underground Coal Gasification (UCG) is a process, in which coal is converted in-situ to Syngas through physicochemical process and the resultant syngas can be used for Power Generation, fertilizers and as feedstock for other chemicals.
Coal plays a crucial role in meeting India's energy requirements. To address the country's increasing energy demand and reduce reliance on imported chemical resources, deeper coal reserves can be utilized for Underground Coal Gasification (UCG). UCG technology holds significant potential for harnessing coal resources at greater depths efficiently.
With this foresight CMPDI is taking initiatives to establish UCG technology under Indian geo-mining Conditions. Efforts are ongoing for collaboration with different UCG technology providers worldwide to assess applicability of their technologies under Indian geo-mining conditions.
Research & Development Activities:
CMPDI and ECL in association with M/s Ergo Exergy Technologies Inc. (EETI), Canada is implementing an R&D Pilot Project at Kasta West Block, Jamtara District, Jharkhand to establish UCG Technology in Indian Geo-mining conditions.
