Geo-Chemical Laboratory

Coal Characterization is carried out for determining the physical, chemical and microscopic properties of coal by carrying out various tests .Characterization helps in deciding the end use of any given coal .It is useful for determining the quality of coal for commercial grading.

The Geo Chemical Laboratory was established in yr 1981 and is involved in carrying systematic and routine characterization of coal at exploration stage for incorporation in Geological Reports. It also caters to washery products, mine grading samples etc.

The Geo- Chemical Lab been accredited with NABL certification in accordance with the standard ISO/IEC 17025:2017 for its facilities at CMPDI (HQ) Ranchi in the field of “TESTING” in 12 different scopes.

With a team of expert manpower and state - of- the – art equipment, Geo-Chemical is carrying out total Characterization for coking and non- coking coal and lignite.

Broad activities  of the chemical laboratory starts from collection of coal samples from different sources viz. coal core, ROM samples, channel samples etc. to analyse various parameters.

The Chemical Lab is equipped with the following testing facilities for sample analysis:

  • Coal core logging and sample preparation.
  • Band by band analysis (Ash %+Moisture % determination)
  • Proximate analysis (Ash %+ Moisture %+Volatile Matter %+Fixed Carbon % determination through conventional & Microprocessor based equipment)
  • Determination of Gross Calorific Value (GCV(Kcal/kg))
  • Ultimate analysis (Carbon %, Hydrogen %, Nitrogen %, Sulphur % & Oxygen %, determination)
  • Moisture% at 60% Relative Humidity & 40℃
  • Ash Fusion Temperature Range (Initial Deformation Temperature, Spherical Temperature, Hemi Spherical Temperature & Fluid Temperature).
  • Hardgrove Grindability Index (HGI)
  • Free Swelling Index (FSI), Crucible Swelling Number (CSN)
  • Low Temperature Gray King Coke Type (LTGKCT)
  • Plastometric test
  • Mercury analysis
  • Ash analysis through WDXRF
